Though chickens have been around for thousands of years, dinosaurs were laying eggs millions of years prior. So technically, eggs were around well before chickens.

I read somewhere a long time ago that chickens really didn’t exist before, and the chicken we have now is essentially a crossbreed of different fowl. So the chicken came before the egg, since the first egg the chicken came from was technically for a nonchicken, and would thus not be a chicken egg per se.
